Auckland to host league Test triple-header

Rugby league's international calendar has been spiced up to feature a triple-header in New Zealand and more meaningful rugby league for Pacific Island nations.

The Kangaroos will play Tonga in a triple-header at Auckland's Eden Park as part of the inaugural Oceania Cup in November.

New Zealand will host end-of-season Tests featuring Australia, Tonga, Fiji, Samoa and Papua New Guinea, as well as the touring Great Britain Lions as part of the re-jigged international calendar announced on Tuesday.

The new initiative, designed to provide consistent, meaningful Tests for Pacific nations, will be split into two divisions, or pools, to contest the Oceania Cup and Oceania Shield.

The combined Lions outfit will tour for the first time since 2006 in unison with the Cup, while the winner of the second pool - containing Samoa, Fiji and Papua New Guinea - will earn promotion in 2020 to replace the touring Kangaroos.

International action will begin on June 22 when the Kiwis host Tonga in a rematch of their memorable World Cup clash won by the visitors, while Samoa play Papua New Guinea and Fiji face the Cook Islands at Campbelltown Stadium.

Australia's first match will be against New Zealand in Wollongong on October 25 before a meeting with Tonga at Eden Park on November 2.

That Test will form part of a triple-header that also features the Kiwis against the Lions and Samoa against Fiji.

The Lions will come out of hibernation to play two Tests against New Zealand - as well as Tongan and Papua New Guinea - but none against Australia.

Rugby Football League chief executive Ralph Rimmer said the return of the Great Britain Rugby League Lions was a big tick for the code.

"The return of the famous Great Britain jersey is something people have been talking about for a long time," he said.

"It's 12 years since Great Britain last played a Test ... there is such history and tradition around that Great Britain shirt, it's great for the game to have it back."

The international schedule also includes women's Tests, with the Kiwi Ferns to host an unconfirmed opponent as part of a double-header with the New Zealand-Tonga mid-season Test, according to NRL.com.

They will also play the Jillaroos in Wollongong on October 25 while the PNG Orchids will meet a Pacific All Stars women's team in Port Moresby on November 16 as a double-header with the Kumuls-Lions Test.
