Aussie Buchanan wins BMX race

Australian Caroline Buchanan made it wins in three consecutive years at the opening round of a world cup BMX season.

Australian Caroline Buchanan leads the world cup standings after winning the first round of the UCI BMX Supercross on Saturday.

The 25 year-old from Canberra controlled the race, keeping the London gold medallist, Mariana Pajon (Colombia) in second spot.

Third place went to Laura Smulders (Netherlands).

Buchanan had won every qualifying race before blitzing the final in a record time of 33.663 seconds after selecting the inside lane.

"I knew today that if I could set myself up and be on the inside then I had a good chance," Buchanan said.

"In my semi-final my reaction was a little late but I knew my track speed was good so I focused on a solid gate in the final."

The win makes it three years in a row for Buchanan at the opening round of a world cup season.

In two weeks' time Buchanan will race in the second world cup round in Manchester.
