An Australian bull rider who was severely injured after being trampled during the College National Finals Rodeo in Wyoming has been showing signs of improvement.

On Monday, Bradie Gray from Hallsville near Tamworth in northern NSW, gave a thumbs up sign to his parents at a hospital in the US.

However, the 20-year-old Gray remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.

A member of the Odessa College rodeo team, Gray was injured after being bucked off and trampled by a bull during Thursday's competition.

He suffered broken ribs, a torn aorta and collapsed lungs.

Odessa coach CJ Aragon told the Casper Star-Tribune that Gray is making small improvements.

A post on the team's Facebook page said Gray gave his parents a thumbs up sign and is trying to communicate by writing.
