Dale Begg-Smith has claimed Australia's first medal at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, taking silver in the men's moguls event.

Alexandre Bilodeau became the first Canadian to win an Olympic gold medal on home soil with a score of 26.75 points.

Defending champion Begg-Smith was second with 26.58, while American Bryon Wilson was third.

Begg-Smith had been aiming to be the first Australian to successfully defend a Winter Olympic title, having claimed gold four years ago in Turin.

The other Australian entrant in the moguls event, Ramone Cooper, was 27th overall with 21.11 and failed to qualify for the 20-man final.

Comeback from injury

A three-time World Cup champion, things looked bad for Canadian-born Begg-Smith when he blew out his knee in January 2009 competing at a World Cup meet in Utah.

But his rehabilitation, first in Canada then on the Australian skifields, was so good Begg-Smith believes it actually enabled him to improve his skiing.

"I felt pretty good coming into this season because, with the injury, down in Australia afterwards we got to do a lot of drills and work on technical issues that were becoming worse," he said.

"And I had never really taken the time to go back and fix it which this allowed me to."

Consistent rain and warmer weather has rendered the bumps on the Cypress Mountain site on the smaller side, helping those who might not usually score as highly on the turns component which is worth 50 per cent of the score.
