Australian authorities have confirmed the deaths of two Australian tourists, Dean and Tanya Griffioen, believed to be from Queensland, in a motorcycle crash in Uganda.

Consular officials are liaising with authorities in Uganda and providing consular assistance to the couple's family, The Department of Foreign Affairs says.

Police in Uganda said the accident happened on Tuesday at Namagogo near Mubende, about 100km southwest of the capital Kampala.

"They died in an accident. They were travelling on a motorcycle from Kasese to Kampala," Traffic police chief Alex Muramuzi said.

Kasese is popular with tourists who track and view mountain gorillas.

Uganda's daily newspaper New Vision said the Australians, aged 33 and 34, died when their motorbike hit a four-wheel drive.

One of them died at the scene, the other on the way to hospital. Their passports revealed the pair had travelled through several African countries on their bike, the newspaper reported.
