Britt Cox has iced an already spectacular snow season with a world championship moguls victory in Spain.

In soft and warm conditions, not dissimilar to spring in the Australian alps, Cox asserted her dominance throughout, qualifying first, winning her semi-final and then taking gold.

She becomes the first Australian to capture a world championship in the Olympic format moguls, with Dale Begg-Smith winning the dual moguls title back in 2007.

The Victorian had it all to do on the Sierra Nevada course as Frenchwoman Perrine Laffont laid down a handy marker of 82.51 as the second last skier on course in the final.

But the silky style which has punctuated Cox's season was evident in her turns and two jumps as she scored 83.63 on the last run of the women's competition to win.

Defending world champion Justine Dufour-Lapointe of Canada (80.74) was third.

It has been an extraordinary season for two-time Winter Olympian Cox in which she comfortably won the discipline and overall freestyle World Cup titles, but Spain always loomed large.

"I am so happy with today," she said.

"I've had my best season ever in World Cup but this was really the event that was in my mind for the entire season and it was the one I really wanted to do well at."

Cox hadn't won an individual event until this season but dominated the circuit this season with seven wins across the singles and dual moguls format.

In eight events in the single format she only finished off the podium once.

A year out from the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea she will be a warm favourite for gold.

It was a disappointing day for the Australian men. Regular World Cup medallist Matt Graham (78.09) appeared to be scored harshly in finishing 14th.

Brodie Summers was 11th (79.58) and Rohan Chapman-Davies was 15th (76.93).

Japan's Ikuma Horishima (88.54) was a surprise winner with France's Benjamin Cavet (87.11) second and Canadian Mikael Kingsbury third (82.85).

The non-Olympic event of dual moguls take place on Friday morning (AEDT) with the freestyle skiing and snowboarding championships running until March 19.
