Aussie extremist reportedly dead in Syria

An Australian jihadist has reportedly been killed in Syria, joining at least 20 others who have died while fighting in the country's civil war.

A Melbourne-raised extremist has reportedly been killed while fighting with Islamic State in Syria.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has not confirmed the death, citing security reasons.

Mahmoud Abdullatif is believed to have travelled to the conflict zone in 2014 and was reportedly killed in recent clashes, social media posts on Tuesday suggest.

Charles Lister, of the Brookings Doha Center, tweeted that Abdullatif was killed about two days ago. On Monday, a woman claiming to be Abdullatif's wife likened him to a martyr.

"Till we reunite in Jannatul Firdaws my dearest husband," she posted on social media.

"You won the race! Heart of a green bird insha'Allah habibi."

Abdullatif reportedly married 21-year-old Zehra Duman in December after she left Australia to meet him in the Middle East.

One of his last social media posts, on December 11, said he wanted a "beautiful death".

"I got married today, alhumdolileh I made hijra and got married here man, insha Allah I receive a beautiful death as well."

At least 20 Australians have been killed in the Syria and Iraq conflicts but the government can't confirm Abdullatif's death.

"Due to the extremely dangerous security situation, consular assistance is no longer available within Syria or Iraq and the government's capacity to confirm reports of this kind is therefore extremely limited," a spokesman for the federal attorney-general's office told AAP on Tuesday.

He said young Australians put themselves in "mortal danger" and only add to the suffering when they get involved in overseas conflict.

"It will usually be families, friends and local communities who are the first to see changes in a person who is radicalising or thinking about travelling to participate in a foreign conflict," the spokesman said, urging anyone with concerns to tell authorities. Abdullatif has not been active online since January 8.
