Aussie figure skaters impress in Europe

Deanna Lockett has won bronze at a World Cup short track speed skating event while three fellow Australians qualified Olympic Games spots in figure skating.

Australia's winter sports success has moved from snow to ice with a World Cup short track speed skating medal and two breakout performances in figure skating in Europe over the weekend.

Deanna Lockett showed her bona fides for next year's Winter Olympics in South Korea with a bronze medal performance in the 1500 metres at the season-opening event in Hungary.

And Australia secured two figure skating qualification spots for the Pyeongchang Games when Kailani Craine snared the ladies' title and Harley Windsor and Katia Alexandrovskaya grabbed bronze in the pairs at the Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany.

For 2014 Winter Olympian Lockett it was a breakthrough effort.

Despite feeling nervous she coolly skated to second in her semi-final before making a last lap attack in the decider to take out bronze.

Lockett moved to Korea, one of the strongholds of the sport, after the Sochi Olympics and is hoping her training regime will deliver her qualification to Pyeongchang in three individual events (500m, 1000m and 1500m).

Meanwhile Craine delivered the skate of her life in Germany to ensure Australia would be represented in ladies' figure skating in Pyeongchang.

The event in Oberstdorf was essentially a last-chance saloon for those countries that hadn't qualified Winter Olympic spots via the world championships.

Craine, who had to finish in the top six, didn't disappoint, dominating the short program and further impressing with her free skate to 'Moulin Rouge'.

The routine featured five triple jumps, three level-four spins and level-four footwork, skills that picked up the Newcastle native 109.43 points and the win.

Similarly junior world champions Windsor and Alexandrovskaya were electric as they earned Australia a pairs spot.

Skating to 'The Mask', the pair executed a perfect triple twist, side by side triple Salchow and triple toe-double toe-double toe as well a throw triple flip and Salchow.

Needing to finish top five, they secured a huge personal best, scoring 125.80 points for the free skating and 190.31 points overall.

While the pairs spot for Australia at the Games was subsequently confirmed, there is still a question mark over Alexandrovskaya's eligibility to take a spot.

The Russian-born and raised 17 year-old has sought to have her citizenship expedited in order to compete for Australia at the Pyeongchang Games with the result still pending.
