Aussie gymnasts chase Games berth in Rio

Australia's female gymnasts will take part in the Rio test event this weekend hoping to secure a start in the teams event at this year's Olympic Games.

Not since 1988 has Australia failed to qualify a female gymnastics team for an Olympic Games - a scenario the latest batch of stars will be looking to avoid this weekend.

Minus injured star Lauren Mitchell, Australia's women's team will take part in the gymnastics Rio test event starting on Saturday night (AEST) - where a top-four finish is required to secure a Games berth.

Australia could only manage 14th in the teams event at last year's world championships, well outside the top-eight result required to secure an Olympics start.

But it was enough to earn an invite to the Rio test event - to be held in the same arena which will host gymnasts at the Games in August - as one of those teams to finish 9th-16th.

Looking to preserve almost 30 years of tradition, women's coach Peggy Liddick knows the pressure is on - she just doesn't want to let on to her young team.

"My superiors remind me of it every single day," Liddick told AAP of Australia's strong history at the Games.

"But it's not fair for me to put that undue pressure on the team.

"I'm really consciously trying not to coach by intimidation.

"It's a real delicate balance between going in confidently and doing our job and yet not having them be so afraid of not qualifying that they strangle their own performance."

Australia go into the meet in good form, having finished third in the team's event at last week's Pacific Rim Championships in the US.

They edged out Japan - who finished sixth at the world championships - for the bronze medal.

With former world champion Mitchell still on the comeback trail from a knee injury and beam specialist Mary-Anne Monckton's year ruined by a knee reconstruction, Liddick is taking a new-look team to Rio.

Georgia-Rose Brown, Emma Nedov and Kiara Munteanu - who finished sixth in the all-around last week in Seattle - are expected to compete in the all-around, with Emily Little, Larrissa Miller and Rianna Mizzen rounding out the team.

Michael Mercieca (men's artistic) and Blake Gaudry (men's trampoline) will also take part in the meet hoping to secure a start at the Games.
