Aussie Morris third in aerials World Cup

David Morris has enjoyed a solid return to aerial skiing with a third place in the World Cup event in China.

Australian Winter Olympics silver medallist David Morris has marked his World Cup return to aerial skiing in style with a third place in his comeback event.

Morris, who sat out the 2014/15 season after his Sochi success, showed he'd lost little over that time by finishing behind local Guangpu Qi and Russia's Petr Medulich on Saturday night.

The Victorian was ninth in qualifying and upped his performance by finishing fourth in the first final before nailing a podium spot in the decider.

"I'm really happy with the result of my return to aerials," he said.

"I felt a lot of pressure to perform well as a returning Olympic medallist, but just concentrated on the same things as always."

In the women's competition Danielle Scott was the best-placed Australian in fourth.

Scott was the only Australian to progress to the finals, after Samantha Wells (15th) and Renee McElduff (18th) unable to win through the qualifying round.

Ashley Caldwell from the United States took out first place, from Zhang Xin of China in second, with American Kiley McKinnon third.
