Simon Baulderstone chairman of the Australian Himalayan Foundation, says the world-renowned mountaineer, who was a member of the 1984 first Australian Everest expedition, died peacefully in a Sydney hospital yesterday.

Mr Baulderstone says Mr Hall was well-known for his feat of survival on Everest in 2006, when, after summitting the mountain, he collapsed just below the summit and had apparently died, only to be found alive the next morning by climbers on their way up the mountain.

His family has asked for their privacy to be respected at this time.

Despite suffering frostbite to six of his fingers and a frozen, paralysed vocal chord during his 2006 expedition, Mr Hall lived against all odds.

Three days after being found by an American mountaineer, he walked slowly but unaided into Kathmandu. But it was a triumph tinged with tragedy, as the Himalayas had claimed the life of his friend and fellow mountaineer Sue Fear just days before.

The 43-year-old Sydney mountaineer fell down a crevasse on her descent from Nepal's Manaslu.

Mr Hall is survived by his wife, Barbara Scanlan, and their two teenage sons Dylan and Dorje.

The family lived in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. His climbing career spanned 30 years and included adventures in the Himalayas, Antarctica and the Andes. He was a founding director of the Australian Himalayan Foundation.

Mr Hall wrote about his survival in the book Dead Lucky.
