Australian woman Angelita Pires has been found not guilty of plotting to kill East Timor's top two political leaders in 2008.

Pires was one of 28 people who have faced a seven-month trial for allegedly conspiring to or attempting to assassinate President Jose Ramos Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao in February 2008.

The 44-year-old was then the lover of rebel leader Alfredo Reinado, who was shot dead in a gunfight that left Ramos Horta critically wounded.

Prosecutors had accused Pires of being an indirect author of the assassination plot by convincing Reinado to kill the men.

But the Dili District Court on Wednesday found there was insufficient evidence to convict her.

The court, however, jailed 23 Timorese men for between nine and 16 years over the plot.

Four other men were set free.

There were emotional scenes as Ms Pires walked free from the court and hugged family and friends.

"I am extremely relieved to be exonerated by the court of any involvement in the events of February 11, 2008," she told reporters outside the court.

"My life has been on hold for over two years and it's been an enormously stressful and emotional time for me.

"I have learned that liberty is one of the most important things a person can possess."

Ms Pires thanked the court for recognising that the allegations against her had been a "setup".

She vowed to stay in East Timor to fight for the freedom of Reinado's men.
