Aussie 'Oscars' awarded in LA

Most of the winners weren't in attendance but Aussie A-List stars were out in force at the AACTA awards in Hollywood.

Julianne Moore, Michael Keaton and the movie Birdman were the big winners at Australia's version of the Oscars.

The 4th Annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts international awards ceremony was held in Hollywood on Saturday.

Birdman was named best film.

Moore, for Still Alice, won the best actress award and Keaton, for Birdman, took best actor.

Patricia Arquette claimed supporting actress for Boyhood and JK Simmons took supporting actor for Whiplash.

Birdman's Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu won the directing gong.

Arquette was one of the few winners who attended the ceremony, with Moore, Keaton and Inarritu sending video acceptance speeches.

One Aussie who made it to the winner's podium was former Home and Away star turned superhero Chris Hemsworth.

Hemsworth's The Avengers co-star, Scarlett Johansson, presented him with the Excellence in Film award.

The ceremony was held at Hollywood's iconic Palladium, located on Sunset Boulevard.

While there were slim award pickings for Australians at the event, there was plenty of Australian star power on show with Nicole Kidman and Geoffrey Rush hosting.

Naomi Watts, Russell Crowe, Rachel Griffiths and Jacki Weaver were also in the sell-out crowd.

The event marked the first time the awards ceremony was combined with the annual G'Day USA black tie ball.
