Aussie out of hospital after US shooting

Perth woman Amy Matthews has been released from a US hospital after being shot in the mouth during an outbreak of violence in New Orleans.

A young Australian woman who almost died when she was hit in the mouth with a bullet during a weekend shooting on New Orleans' famous Bourbon Street has been released from hospital.

Perth university student Amy Matthews, 21, was treated for a gunshot wound to her face after getting caught up in the incident in the French Quarter on Sunday.

Speaking from LSU Interim Hospital before her release, Ms Matthews said a bullet struck her right cheek and exited through her top lip, damaging her gums and jawbone, shattering most of her teeth and ripping apart her tongue.

"Four centimetres higher and lower and I definitely probably wouldn't be talking to you today," she told Nine News.

Ms Matthews was on a gap year from university when the incident occurred.

She was tended to by two marines before being transported to hospital.

Meanwhile a 21-year-old woman from Hammond, one of the 10 victims of the shooting, had died, Louisiana State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson said on Wednesday.

Three others were reported in stable condition.

Ms Matthews is expected to return home as soon as possible.

No arrests have been made.
