Aussie punter signs with NFL Eagles

Cameron Johnston, who was drafted by AFL club Melbourne in 2010, has been signed by the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles as a punter.

Cameron Johnston, the Geelong-raised Ohio State punter who dabbled with an AFL career, has been signed by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 25-year-old went through the agony of not hearing his name called out during the three-day, seven round NFL draft.

But, minutes after the draft ended on Saturday Johnston announced he had been signed by the Eagles as a free agent.

"Excited for the opportunity to sign with the @Eagles! Looking forward to getting to Philadelphia to compete and learn!" Johnston tweeted.

The Eagles have a tradition of signing Australian punters with Sav Rocca and Brad Wing spending time in Philadelphia.

Johnston was drafted by the Melbourne Demons in 2010, but the AFL club delisted him at the end of the 2011 season.

He then set his sights on putting his big boot to use in the American game and had huge success with Ohio State.
