Aussie Spirit to fight for Tokyo spot

The Aussie Spirit will fight for a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics at the world championships in Japan as softball prepares to make a games comeback.

The Aussie Spirit have begun their quest for Olympic softball glory by taking aim at a world championship gold medal in Japan.

There is a major incentive for participating countries with the victors of the 10-day competition in Chiba guaranteed a berth at the 2020 Olympics.

Softball will end a 12-year-Olympic hiatus in Tokyo - the sport last made an appearance in 2008 in Beijing - when six teams fight for the gold medal.

Currently No.4 in the world rankings, The Aussie Spirit have medalled at every Games when softball was played.

"I am extremely proud of our Olympic heritage," Softball Australia CEO David Pryles said.

"Softball was part of the Olympics four times from 1996 to 2008 -- and Australia stood on the medal dais each time."

Should the Spirit not win in Japan, they can still qualify for Tokyo in 2020 through four qualifying spots at regional tournaments.

Only two members of the Australian team have previously played at an Olympics, captain Stacey Porter and pitcher Justine Smethurst.

The XVI Women's Softball Championship takes place from August 2-12.

Aussie Spirit: Amelia Cudicio, Chelsea Forkin, Leigh Godfrey, Stacey McManus, Kaia Parnaby, Samantha Poole, Stacey Porter, Ellen Roberts, Justine Smethurst, Carmelle Sorensen, Tarni Stepto, Taylah Tsitsikronis, Jade Wall, Clare Warwick, Melinda Weaver, Belinda White, Tamieka Whitefield.
