Aussie surfers break record in Indonesia

Three Australian surfers are claiming a world record for the longest wave surfed, more than 17 kilometres on a tidal wave in Indonesia.

Surfers are known for chasing an endless summer and the longest ride, but three Australians can seemingly claim just that, having surfed one wave for more than 17 kilometres.

James Cotton, Roger Gamble and Zig Van Sluys took to the Kampar River in Teluk Meranti village in Indonesia's Riau Province, attempting to break a world record for the longest surfing ride.

They set out to master the `bono' tidal wave in Kampar River and Cotton says they tamed the task on Friday.

"World record! 17.2 kilometres individually and 37 kilometres in a team," he said.

"Yes, this is a Guiness Book of Record. Yes, I will get the medal from Guiness book of Records."

The head of the Pelalawan Tourism Office, Zulkifli, said Bono is an icon.

"This tidal wave is just like seeing the total solar eclipse, not everytime and everyone can see it. It's destiny," Zulkifli said.

"I think me and the media are quite satisfied to see it directly up close and personal. It could reach the height of 1.7 metres and even in seven points, it reached 3 metres high."

Cotton, Gamble and Van Sluys wore specific watches to record the attempt which they will open upon returning to Australia to claim their record.
