Aussie walkers qualify for world titles

Walkers Dane Bird-Smith and Regan Lamble and pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall are off to London while Ryan Gregson and Zoe Buckman have broken Australian records.

Australian walkers Dane Bird-Smith and Regan Lamble have qualified for this year's London athletics world championships with wins in their national 20km races in Adelaide.

Rio Olympics bronze medallist Bird-Smith claimed line honours for a second straight year in 1 hour 19 minutes and 37 seconds at the Oceania and Australian 20km Race Walking Championships on Sunday morning, comfortably bettering the 1:24:00 qualifying standard for August's world titles.

It ensures the 24-year-old Queenslander will compete in a third consecutive world championships and continues his impressive start to 2017, which includes last week's national record in the men's 3000m track walk.

Fellow Olympian Lamble won the women's 20km event in 1:29:58.

Rising pole vault star Kurtis Marschall has also secured his ticket to London with a 5.70m equal personal best jump at South Australia's state championships on Saturday night.

The 19-year-old equalled the qualifying standard for his first world titles days after competing in the Nitro Athletics in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, Ryan Gregson (3:36.50) broke the Australian indoor 1500m record by nearly three seconds at the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix while Zoe Buckman (2:39.47) bettered a 29-year-old national indoor record in the women's 1000m.
