Aussie women into Japan sevens quarters

Australia are undefeated and top their pool after day one of the rugby sevens tournament at Kitakyushu in Japan where they have advanced to the quarter-finals.

Australia have topped their pool on Saturday's opening day of the Kitakyushu women's rugby sevens in Japan with victories over Brazil, Ireland and Fiji to progress to the quarter-finals.

The Rio Olympic champions accounted for Brazil 38-0, Ireland 36-0 and Fiji 17-12 in Pool B at the new Mikuni World Stadium.

Ellia Green was at her blistering, best scoring five tries across day one, as Chloe Dalton added 22 points to her tally.

"The first two games were awesome and we had a great start against Fiji in the last match," Australian coach Tim Walsh said.

"We got a bit loose with the ball but we were able to close it out.

"It was really good to give a lot of minutes to Demi Hayes, Dom Du Toit and Emma Sykes to help the girls coming through. The experienced girls played really well and worked hard when we needed to close out the game (against Fiji).

"Everyone is in the best knick that they could be and we'll be ready for tomorrow."

Australia will play France in the first quarter-final on Sunday with kickoff at 11.30am (AEST).

New Zealand and Canada also finished top of their respective pools.

Sydney tournament winners Canada will tackle Russia, Fiji take on USA and series leaders New Zealand meet England for a place in the last four.
