Aussie women take water polo league silver

Australia's women's water polo team have lost 6-5 to the United States in the FINA World League Intercontinental Tournament final in Texas.

The Australian women's water polo team have narrowly missed out on gold at the FINA World League Intercontinental Tournament in Texas, going down 6-5 to the US in the final.

The Stingers were forced to play catch-up throughout the final after conceding three goals in the opening quarter, but fell one goal short against the reigning Olympic champions.

"I really admire the way we fought our way back into the game," coach Greg McFadden said.

The United States were the only team to beat the Australians throughout the tournament, who wrapped up wins against China, Canada, Japan and Brazil.

Captain Rowie Webster scored the equal-most goals in the competition with 13, while Kelsey Wakefield was named goalkeeper of the tournament.

The Stingers are one of four countries to have already qualified for the Rio Olympics, and will finalise their tournament preparations at the World League Super Final in China this June.
