Aussie women's sevens side win world title

A win over Spain has ensured Australia's women's sevens team has taken out the world series title in France.

The Australian women's sevens rugby team have clinched the country's first-ever world series title after a win over Spain.

The Pearls only required the quarter-final win at the season-ending tournament in Clermont-Ferrand to ensure enough points to be declared overall champions.

That came to fruition thanks to their 35-0 thrashing of the Spaniards.

Chloe Dalton was the star with a match-haul of 15 points through a try and five conversions. Emilee Cherry also scored a double.

The result followed on from the Pearls beating Fiji (34-0), Ireland (40-5) and hosts France (19-12) on day one.

Australia now qualify for the cup semi-finals.

Spain had eliminated Australia at the same stage during the 2013 Rugby Sevens World Cup.

Pearls coach Tim Walsh was unsurprisingly delighted with the efforts of his team.

"Nothing really phases this group - they're a class bunch of players and as the sport grows and grows the pressure on them will only grow," he said.

"I really think we can handle the pressure."

Co-captain Shannon Parry said the side was focused on getting the result.

"After a good day one we went into today with a lot of confidence. Walshy instils into us the need to go through the processes to get the outcome we want and we just follow them," she said.

The Pearls play New Zealand in the Cup semi-final on Monday morning (AEST).

Australia is just the second team to win the Women's Sevens World Series with New Zealand having won the previous three.

The Pearls will head to the Rio Olympics as the competition favourites.
