Aussies bomb in US Open golf qualifying

On a tough day at sectional qualifying no further Australian golfers made it into the field for this month's US Open at Oakmont.

Aron Price and Nick O'Hern are the last hopes for Australian golf to increase its US Open presence after a tough day at sectional qualifying.

Eight different sites across the United States hosted qualifying on Monday but it was a dismal day for the Australians as none managed to earn a spot in the Open to be played at Oakmont from June 16-19.

A major storm hit the Jacksonville site in Florida, suspending play until Tuesday, leaving Price and O'Hern as the last two with a chance.

Price sits tied second at five under par through just two holes of his second round, chasing one of just four spots on offer.

O'Hern is at two under through four holes of round two.

It was a tough day for the rest of the Australian hopefuls.

Aaron Baddeley looked set to get a ticket for a shot at some redemption.

He famously held the US Open lead after the third round at Oakmont in 2007 before falling with a final round 80. Paired with Tiger Woods in the final group, his two-shot overnight lead evaporated on the opening hole when he made triple bogey.

He was well in the mix on Monday after an opening four under round in Columbus, Ohio but he shot three over in the afternoon to finish one-under and four shots out of a last spot playoff.

"It's disappointing for sure," Baddeley said.

"It would have been nice to get back there and have another go but it wasn't to be.

"I'll just have to put my head down on the regular tour this week and hopefully get a good result."

John Senden and Stuart Appleby were also well off the pace in Columbus while Brady Watt and Robert Allenby were the closest to a place in Tennessee.

Watt missed a playoff by one shot when he couldn't muster one final birdie in his last two holes. He played the 2014 US Open after getting through qualifying.

Allenby produced a vintage display in the morning, shooting five under, meaning anything under par in the afternoon would have had him in with a chance.

Needing just one birdie in his last five holes, Allenby instead made two bogeys to crash out of contention.

James Nitties was two shots off the playoff at the same venue while Daniel Fox and Rhein Gibson were well back.

Matt Jones and Nathan Holman struggled in Springfield, Ohio and Mitch Krywulycz was miles back in Georgia.

World No.1 Jason Day leads the Australian tilt already exempt for the Open, joining Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Steven Bowditch, Ogilvy and Cameron Smith.
