Australian authors Peter Carey and Christos Tsiolkas have been nominated for the prestigious Man Booker Prize for Fiction.
The long-list for prize, one of the most prestigious awards in English-language literature, was announced in London on Tuesday, with 13 novels in contention.
Carey is in the running for his third Man Booker Prize for his latest novel Parrot and Olivier in America.
The book is a reimagining of Alexis de Tocqueville's famous journey to America, evoking the Old World colliding with the New.
Carey is one of only two authors to have won the prize twice - in 1988 for Oscar and Lucinda, and 2001 for True History of the Kelly Gang.
In 1985 his book Illywhacker was short-listed for the prize and Theft: A Love Story was long-listed in 2006.
Tsiolkas has been recognised for his novel The Slap, which won the Commonwealth Writers Prize last year.
The book, which examines identities and personal relationships in a multicultural society, was also short-listed for the Miles Franklin Literary Award.
Among the other works to be long-listed for the Man Booker Prize are The Thousand Autumns of Zacob de Zoet by David Mitchell, Skippy Dies by Paul Murray, The Stars in the Bright Sky by Alan Warner and Trespass by Rose Tremain.
"Here are thirteen exceptional novels - books we have chosen for their intrinsic quality, without reference to the past work of their authors," said chair of judges Andrew Motion.
"Wide-ranging in their geography and their concern, they tell powerful stories which make the familiar strange and cover an enormous range of history and feeling.
"We feel confident that they will provoke and entertain."
The 2010 short-list will be announced on September 7, with the winner to be revealed on October 12.
The winner of the Man Booker Prize will receive STG50,000 ($A85,778), while each of the six short-listed authors will receive STG2,500. ($A4,290)
