Kane Williamson's captaincy is under the spotlight following a dubious decision to send Australia in to bat on a flat and hard Manuka Oval pitch during Tuesday's second one-dayer.
After Williamson won the toss and elected to bowl, Australia made 5-378 - the second highest ODI total at the ground and the side's biggest 50-over score at home.
The Canberra pitch is traditionally a batsman's paradise and has consistently produced big scores.
Williamson elected to bowl believing the humid conditions and light rain in the morning would have created ideal conditions for his seam bowling attack.
However the Australians posted a mammoth total thanks to a Dave Warner century on a surface that offered little for the bowlers.
In the last six ODI games at the Canberra ground, the team batting first has won.
It came after Williamson made a major blunder at the SCG in game one when he failed to review an lbw appeal against Smith when the Australian skipper was on 14.
Replays showed that Williamson would have been successful had he referred it to the third umpire.
Smith went on to make 164.
