Aussies must wait for quarter-final tilt

The world surfing tour event in Portugal is on standby ahead of the women's quarter-finals featuring Aussies Nikki van Dijk, Sally Fitzgibbons and Keely Andrew.

Three Australian women will contest the quarter-finals of the Cascais Women's Pro in Portugal but they will have to wait a day after the Championship Tour was forced to use a back-up venue to decide the last eight.

World No.1 Sally Fitzgibbons will come up against countrywoman Keely Andrew after the latter beat wildcard Teresa Bonvalot of Portugal.

"It's always nice to make heats," said Andrew, who is coming off a runner-up finish at the Trestles.

"I obviously didn't get the scores that I was hoping for but making it through is what matters. For the rest of the year I just want to put my head down, make sure I can re-qualify through the top 10 on the CT and feel confident."

Fellow Australian Nikki van Dijk will face 2015 runner-up Lakey Peterson of the US, who advanced by beating Brazil's Silvana Lima.

"I was ready to surf this morning so I'm glad we ran," Peterson said.

"I'm happy to get this round done and keep the momentum going. That heat win felt really good. Silvana is deadly in those conditions so I knew it would be tough. I just had to trust in my surfing and focus on a steady heat and looking powerful."

The quarter-finals will be rounded out by a clash between Hawaii's Carissa Moore and Sage Erickson of the United States.
