Aussies name Ashes, Cup bowling coaches

Tasmanian mentor Adam Griffith has been seconded and will serve as Australia's World Cup bowling coach, while Troy Cooley will perform the job during the Ashes.

Australia have opted against naming a full-time bowling coach, appointing Troy Cooley and Adam Griffith on short-term assignments for the Ashes and World Cup respectively.

Griffith, formerly Justin Langer's right-hand man at Western Australia, will remain head coach of Tasmania but has been seconded and will join the World Cup squad for a 10-day training camp in early May then travel to England.

Cooley, the guru who had helped England prevail in the 2005 Ashes series, is set to return to his regular post at Cricket Australia's training base in Brisbane after this year's Ashes tour of England.

It means CA is yet to find a long-term replacement for David Saker, who had effectively been shown the door at the end of summer.

CA interim team performance manager Belinda Clark suggested a review of the team's coaching structure would be undertaken after the Ashes.

Griffith, a leading candidate to replace Saker on a long-term basis, made it clear on Monday he was still very much focused on state duties.

"At this stage, it's just for the World Cup," Griffith said in Hobart.

"If we make the final in England, I'll miss the first five or six weeks (of Tasmania's pre-season training).

"With modern technology these days, I'll be in constant link with what's happening here - with footage, calls and Skype.

"I'll be across everything going on and we'll spend a lot of time over the next couple of weeks planning and making sure everything is in place for when I go."

Former Tasmanian paceman Griffith has previously served as Australia's bowling coach on a short-term basis, when he and Langer served as stand-in coaches during a 2016 tri-series in the West Indies.

"While his primary focus will be on preparing our fast bowling group for the physical and mental demands of a World Cup in England, he'll also be a great educator and mentor for our entire squad," Langer said.

Cooley returned to work as Australia's bowling coach in 2006, having mentored English quicks Steve Harmison, Andrew Flintoff, Matthew Hoggard and Simon Jones throughout the memorable 2005 contest that marked England's first Ashes series win since since 1987.

More recently, Cooley has served as Australia's bowling coach during this month's ODI series against India and Pakistan.

"He's been a fantastic addition to our coaching team, and brings a great wealth of knowledge, experience and success," Langer said.
