Kiwi golfer Ben Campbell has eagled the 17th hole to take a one-shot lead over Australian Brad Kennedy after the third round of the New Zealand Open on Saturday.

Campbell leads the way at 20-under par after a 66 at the Millbrook Resort while second-round leader Kennedy shot a 68.

"I didn't have my A-game today but managed to get a good score on the board. I have talked to my coach about doing ugly well," Campbell said.

Kennedy, who had led for most of the day, mixed five birdies with two bogeys to stay right in the mix.

"There are some guys behind who can shoot low so I know I need to play well, stay aggressive and do my best to chase down Ben who holed everything today," Kennedy said.

Kennedy, the 2011 champion, is two shots ahead of Australia's 2014 winner Dimitrios Papadatos, who double bogeyed the par-3 18th in a round of 66.

"I have already won one tournament this year, at the Oates Vic Open, so there is no reason why I can't make it two," Papadatos said.

Papadatos is at 17-under along with New Zealander Michael Hendry with NSW's James Nitties alone in fifth place at 16-under.

Australia's defending champion Matthew Griffin, Victorian Deyen Lawson and Korean Sung-Jae Im are tied-sixth at 15-under while Ryan Fox fired an eight-under 63 to jump up the leaderboard.

The highest-ranked Kiwi golfer - who has Steve Williams caddying this week - finds himself tied-ninth at 13-under along with Aussie duo Andrew Evans and Andrew Dodt, and Korean Young-Han Song.

Tournament organisers have forecast cooler weather with light rain for the final day of play on Sunday, of the PGA Tour of Australasia event.
