Aust coach banned in NZ over misconduct

An Australian coach and his daughter have agreed to bans following complaints of misconduct while on international showjumping duty for New Zealand.

An Australian equestrian coach who was on the coaching staff of the New Zealand national team has accepted a life ban from the sport after alleged misconduct during a tour of Australia this year.

Jeff McVean has been permanently struck off from coaching across the Tasman, although he could conceivably coach in another country if offered a job.

His daughter, Kate Laurie, has agreed to a suspended ban relating to the same incident.

McVean stepped down as Jumping New Zealand's high-performance manager after tour by a senior Kiwi team in April.

He agreed to the ban from any official New Zealand high-performance role if the unspecified complaints against him were dropped.

McVean represented Australia at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games before moving to New Zealand in 1990, establishing himself as a leading coach and trainer.

Laurie's sanction says she will be banned from competing for three months should she breach an agreed code of conduct over the next year.

In a statement, Laurie apologised and acknowledged her conduct during the tour fell below the standards expected of a senior team member.

Laurie, who relocated to Australia earlier this year, became New Zealand's youngest Olympic showjumping equestrian at age 22 when she competed at the 2008 Games in Beijing. She placed 12th.
