Aust donating on Facebook to be easier

More than 15,000 registered Australian charities will be able to accept donations through Facebook but they won't be able to access the money immediately.

Australians will be able to donate to charities via Facebook more easily, with a new feature that's hoped to drive up donations.

The social media giant and PayPal have teamed up to better connect users with charities, launching a special fee-free fund on Thursday.

The fund accepts donations on behalf of charities and guarantees to pass on the money in full within three months.

Operating costs are covered by PayPal and other partners.

Similar operations have been running in the US, Canada and the UK and raised more than $130 million in 2017.

Starlight Children's Foundation, beyondblue and the Royal Flying Doctor Service are among those who have already joined.

It comes as new research commissioned by Facebook suggested Australians had given more than $470 million to causes because of what they'd seen on the social media site.

Policy director Mia Garlick said the new native fundraiser platform - which also supports crowd funding campaigns for a fee - would remove the friction of the donation process.

PayPal Giving Fund Australia director Elaine Herlihy hopes the ability to find, fundraise and donate in one go will drive more donations and also encourage charities to make themselves more available to mobile payments.

"Over 70 per cent of Australians want to use mobiles for payments but only 50 per cent of business are mobile optimised," she told AAP.

"There is a gap for charities in this country to ensure they are able to take payments via smart phones more seamlessly."

Eligible charities need to ensure they are registered through the Australian Charities and Non-profits Commission and have a 'charity page' on Facebook.

Donations remain tax-deductible as the fund is itself a registered charity.
