Aust east coast clutching for umbrellas

Few places in Australia's eastern states are expected to escape a drenching over the next few days as two low-pressure systems bring heavy rain.

Australia's eastern states are expected to cop a drenching over the next few days as two low pressure systems bring heavy rain.

Some residents in tropical far north Queensland have been warned to expect more than 100mm of rain, but the joint systems are predicted to cover almost all of the state as well as NSW and Victoria from Thursday.

Northern parts of Tasmania also will get between 30mm and 50mm.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Scott Williams says while Sydney and Melbourne should expect some light falls, areas of Brisbane could be in for close to 50mm by Saturday afternoon.

"I don't think it'll be spectacular for Sydney, but nevertheless it'll be a wet period," Mr Williams told AAP on Wednesday.

Only some areas of eastern Victoria, the far west of NSW and Queensland's southwest are expected to miss the big wet.
