The financial intelligence units of Australia and Indonesia will co-host a summit to boost efforts to disrupt financing for terrorism in the region.
AUSTRAC and PPATK will hold the event in Sydney in November to draw together counter-terrorism financing specialists, law enforcement agencies, national security representatives, policy-makers, industry and academics from ASEAN countries.
The summit will seek regional agreements to share financial and other intelligence to follow the money trails, and shut down syndicates financing foreign terrorist fighters and violent extremism.
The announcement came as federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan visited Jakarta on Wednesday in his role as the prime minister's adviser on counter-terrorism.
He said Australia could learn from Indonesia's example of tolerance.
"They are really a great example to the world on how to run a multi-faith society," he told reporters.
"These are values we share in Australia as well."
Mr Keenan is the first minister to visit Jakarta since contact was frozen with Indonesia over the execution of Bali Nine duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott's last visit to the capital was in October, when President Joko Widodo was inaugurated.
But Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has since had talks with her counterpart, Retno Marsudi, and Trade Minister Andrew Robb is scheduled to bring a large business delegation to Jakarta in November.
