Australia and Great Britain have played out a scoreless draw in their opening match of hockey's Champions Trophy in London.

The Kookaburras had a massive six chances at penalty corners in the first quarter but couldn't convert any of them.

After the missed opportunities, the ball was back down in the Great Britain circle early in the second quarter with a fast attempt on goal, but Tyler Lovell swiftly knocked it out of range.

Great Britain scored their first penalty corner attempt with two minutes to go in the first half.

It was deflected, and they got a second chance but Lovell saved the ball from the net with ease.

With eight minutes left in the game Australia got a shot at goal with a penalty corner that was deflected with a great save from Great Britain goalkeeper George Pinner.

"We created a lot of opportunities, we had a lot of corners that we unfortunately didn't put away," Kookaburras coach Graham Reid said.

"It was a mix perhaps of execution issues, but also perhaps that Great Britain defended very well and we just have to work a little bit harder on different variations.

"Now we have Korea up next. They are the team to chase and we only have 22 hours before our next game so we have to put this game to bed and look towards Korea tomorrow."

The Kookaburras will face Korea at 3am AEST on Sunday.

In other results from the first day of the Champions Trophy, Germany and India played out a 3-all draw and Korea defeated Belgium 2-0.
