Aust podiatrist's wife jailed in Bahamas

Donna Vasyli, convicted of her husband's murder in their Caribbean home, claimed she had battered women's syndrome.

Australian millionaire Donna Vasyli has been sentenced to 20 years' jail in The Bahamas for the stabbing murder of her renowned podiatrist husband.

Phillip Vasyli, 59, was found in the couple's home in March after what Acting Chief Justice Stephen Isaacs described was "a domestic dispute gone horribly wrong", the Nassau Guardian reported.

Vasyli, 55, had described her husband as the love of her life, but claimed she suffered battered women's syndrome and stayed with him despite his abuse, infidelity, and drug and alcohol addiction, the court heard.

Dr Vasyli, also an Australian and the owner of multiple podiatry clinics around the world, founded an orthotic footwear company that sells Vionic with Orthaheel Technology products.

The couple lived in a multimillion-dollar home in a gated community in Old Fort Bay, in The Bahamas.

Vasyli's lawyer had asked for a sentence of probation, but when the judge announced the jail term, she showed no emotion.

This was in contrast to her tears and shock on October 1 when a jury announced its guilty verdict.
