Australian Federal Police will help their Papua New Guinea counterparts plan security arrangements for next year's APEC leaders' summit in Port Moresby.
Fifty-six officers will take on advisory roles covering personal protection, maritime operations, dog handling, bomb searching, traffic operations, airport control, intelligence and investigations.
Justice Minister Michael Keenan on Tuesday announced $48 million in funding to extend the presence of 73 officers in PNG until after the November summit until December 18.
There will also be 17 officers continuing to train Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary officers to improve to custody management practices, responses to family and sexual violence, juvenile justice matters and professionalism.
Federal police have had a mentoring partnership role in PNG for close to 10 years.
Human Rights Watch recently lashed PNG for cases of police brutality.
Last June police opened fire on protesting university students in the capital Port Moresby, wounding 23 people.
The students had been attempting to march to the national parliament to call for a no-confidence motion in Prime Minister Peter O'Neill, who is facing corruption allegations.
Parts of PNG and Port Moresby are a hot bed of violent crime including gang rapes and carjackings.
