Veteran Liberal senator Eric Abetz has called for a delay in the release of a major review into the electricity sector, arguing it now needs to consider the US decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement.

Senator Abetz said it was important the review by chief scientist Alan Finkel, which is due to go to the prime minister and premiers next week, also takes into account Donald Trump's announcement.

"I don't think anybody would be critical in the event that report was delayed so, as part of the review, there could be full consideration as to what the consequences might be for Australia," he told AAP on Friday.

The former Abbott government minister said the government had made a strong point about wanting to ensure Australian businesses remained internationally competitive by seeking to reduce corporate tax rates.

"It makes sense that with the withdrawal of such a significant player we should take stock to ensure we don't unwittingly export jobs for no environmental gain," he said.

Senator Abetz said Australian exporters such as beef producers could be left with a competitive disadvantage from the US decision, but the exact impact would not be known without some facts being put on the table.

He suggested the prime minister and foreign minister seek urgent talks with the Trump administration on what an alternative agreement to the Paris accord might look like.

"If the US has an approach that might make things fairer for everybody, let's talk to them."
