Australian duo Andy Wright and Robert Mackenzie have missed out on the sound editing Oscar for their work on Mel Gibson's World War II drama, Hacksaw Ridge.

In a surprise, the award went to the team from Arrival.

Wright and Mackenzie were favourites heading into Sunday's ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and their biggest threats were considered to be the sound editors from La La Land.
