Malcolm Turnbull is confident Australia's close relationship with America will continue to strengthen under the administration of new US president Donald Trump.

"He's come into office as an agent of change and he's demonstrating that," the prime minister told Triple M radio of the newly-sworn in leader.

The relationship as steadfast allies and trusted friends was one built over many years by millions of Australians and Americans, he said.
