Aust works on rehab for jailed terrorists

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says Australia is keenly aware that Indonesia is due to release hundreds of prisoners convicted of terrorism crimes.

Hundreds of prisoners convicted of terrorism-related crimes are due to be released from Indonesian jails over the next couple of years, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

Australia has been working with its neighbour to share ideas about how best to rehabilitate these prisoners and stem the spread of "perverted ideology" within the prison system, Ms Bishop told reporters at a countering terrorism summit in New York.

"If they've not been rehabilitated then they pose a serious risk not only to Indonesia but to our region," Ms Bishop said.
