The federal government hopes a new trade post in the US city of Boston will create opportunities for Australian business by tapping into a innovation and technology bonanza fuelled by nearby top-level universities.

Trade Minister Steve Ciobo says Austrade's presence in Boston will focus on two-way trade and investment, especially on medical technology.

The New England region is home to Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard and Yale.
