Australia has condemned the stabbing death of a young Indian man in Melbourne, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard says.

Accounting graduate Nitin Garg, 21, originally from the Punjab in northern India, was set upon and stabbed about 10pm (AEDT) on Saturday in West Footscray.

He staggered to the nearby Hungry Jack's restaurant, where he worked, before collapsing.

Ambulance officers took him to the Royal Melbourne Hospital but were unable to save him.

The attack is the latest in a series against Indians in Australia and has been widely condemned in India.

"I obviously unreservedly condemn this attack," Ms Gillard told reporters in Sydney on Monday.

"People in Melbourne's west, people around the nation, I think they will be joining together to say we unreservedly condemn this violence."

Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna says the murder was "a heinous crime on humanity" carried out on an innocent Indian who had gone to study in Australia.

He said the Australian government should take note of the deep anger the latest attack on Indian nationals has caused in his homeland.

Ms Gillard said police should now be allowed to carry out their investigation.

"This is a nation that welcomes international students," she said.

"We want to make them welcome, this is a welcoming and accepting country."
