In Sydney, a range of events across the city pay heed to the broad appeal of the day.

Woggan-ma-gule at the Royal Botanic Gardens is an indigenous 'meeting of the waters' ceremony where you can kick your day off by a hopefully tranquil Sydney Harbour.
If you don't mind the crowds, the big place to be in the Harbour City on this most Australian of days is down by Darling Harbour. Short films, a kids concert, world music and dance and, you guessed it, a truck load of fireworks.
Melbourne
Melbourne officially kicks things with a flag-raising ceremony with the premier, governor and lord mayor at the Town Hall at 10.30am.
Other interesting takes on the day are the Australia Project's graphic interpretations of our country at Federation Square, as well as Know Your Product 2011, with plenty of unisnged and independent music on offer at Watefront City.
Canberra
In the nation's capital, the focus is Australia Day in the Park, at different locations in the city.
A 'true blue bush picnic', local bands, skating and bmx shows – there's plenty to choose from.
If you're in the mood for the surrounds of the National Botanic Gardens, Annie and the Armadillos are putting on a concert in these lush surrounds. Entry by gold coin donation .
Adelaide
The big event in Adelaide is Australia Day in the City, at Elder Park and on King William Road. Come along for the Australia Day parade, followed by a concert featuring Jessica Mauboy and Kisschasy, and then a fireworks display.

In Darwin, the flag-raising and citizenship ceremony is taking place at the Entertainment Centre from 10AM, there's a sports carnival atmosphere across the territory with plenty of different clubs taking part, and if you're keen, there's a 4km fun run in Darwin.
If you're anywhere near Tennant Creek you can join in a breakfast bbq before taking part in some all-Australian events, not least thong-throwing.
Tasmania
What could be more Australian than a day at the beach? Not much, say the organisers of 'A day at the beach'. Some 10,000 attended the outing at Kingston Beach last year, so if you're up for the sand, some sport, music and a BBQ, get on down.
Meanwhile, the Sandy Bay Regatta provides oodles of activities, from cricket to pentaque, tug of war to sack races, and of course plenty of watery fun as well.
Perth
The WA Concert takes lace in Perth, with a host of performers from a range of community groups.
There's also the Too Solid music festival featuring Chrstine Anu and many others.
Brisbane
In Brisbane, recent floods have seen the need for a reorganisation of many of the events at South Bank, but a number of celebrations will be proceeding.
While the multi-faith ceremony will not be going ahead due to flooding, you can still catch the flag-raising ceremony.
