The Turnbull government has its eyes set on a free trade deal with Hong Kong.

Trade Minister Steve Ciobo says he is taking the first steps towards an agreement with Australia's 12th largest trading partner, calling for public submissions.

"A (free trade agreement) with Hong Kong would complement our FTA with China and further integrate the Australian economy with Asia," he said in a statement on Monday.
