Australia needs more migrants: Prof

A leading demographer says Australia desperately needs more skilled migrants so the economy can continue to grow.

The call is coming from Australian National University Professor Peter McDonald, who says Australia can't fix population growth, and forget about its relationship with the economy.

Professor McDonald, who is the director of the Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute at the ANU, was speaking at a seminar hosted by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia.

He says if the government says we are going to cut immigration it must also say which projects and economic aspects aren't going to be done.

Professor McDonald says the growth of mining and other industries means Australia needs to fill labour shortages.
