Australia salutes brave Thai cave rescuers

Nine Australians involved in the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a Thai cave have been honoured during a ceremony in Canberra.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE THAI CAVE RESCUE MEDAL PRESENTATION

PRIME MINISTER MALCOLM TURNBULL

"You made us so proud. Selflessly courageous. Superbly professionally competent, we could not have better ambassadors showing the best of our Australian values than you."

"You saved those young men, as you did, so inspired not just your own nation, our nation, but holding its breath, and praying for your success, you inspired the whole world."

GOVERNOR-GENERAL SIR PETER COSGROVE

"Our fellow Australians, along with Thai citizens and the men and women of other nations conducted a thrilling rescue of helpless young men, who were themselves strong and brave, and in doing so captivated the world."

"Your nation is so proud of you. Today, Australia salutes you."

SIR PETER'S OFFICIAL SECRETARY MARK FRASER

"Their acts have astonished us all. The boys have returned to the warm embrace of the outside world, because of these men standing before us, and because of their bravery."

"They did not give up until the job was done and for their acts of bravery, today our nation, says thank you."
