Australia sends relief ship to Fiji

The government has sent HMAS Canberra to Fiji to assist in recovery and relief efforts in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The federal government has sent off its biggest ship to assist Fiji recover from the devastation wreaked by Cyclone Winston.

HMAS Canberra is expected to arrive in Fijian waters from early next week with 800 relief personnel on board, army engineering assets, three helicopters and around 60 tonnes of emergency relief supplies including water purification equipment and medical supplies.

They'll help Fijian authorities clear debris, restore power, purify water and conduct engineering assessments following the cyclone which has left 42 people dead and more than 30,000 homeless.
