Oxfam says Australia should do more to help to increase the number of women in Afghanistan's police force, as NATO troops prepare to leave the country next year.
A report by the international aid organisation says only one per cent of Afghanistan's 157,000-strong National Police Force is female, and very few are deployed in rural areas.
It says crimes against women too often go unreported, and increasing female participation in the police force is essential to improving safety and living conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan.

Oxfam Chief Executive Doctor Helen Szoke says Australia is well-placed to help achieve this, after committing to assist Afghanistan past 2014.
