Australia take silver in women's relay

Australia fell painfully short of victory, claiming silver in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay.

Australia fell painfully short of victory as they claimed the silver medal in the women's 4x100m freestyle final at the world championships in Barcelona.

A team of Cate Campbell, Bronte Campbell, Emma McKeon, Alicia Coutts were headed only in the closing stages to finish second behind the US on Sunday.

The performance was set up by a spectacular first-leg by Australian women's spearhead Cate Campbell, who clocked 52.33 seconds - the fastest ever 100m freestyle swim in a textile suit.

The US won in three minutes and 32.31 seconds, ahead of Australia (3:32.43) and the Netherlands (3:35.77).

Australia were ahead with 50m to go before American anchor Megan Romano out-touched Alicia Coutts, who was swimming her third race of the night.
