Australia third at rowing world champs

Australia added two medals on the final day of competition to finish third at the rowing world championships in Florida.

Paralympian Erik Horrie's PR1 men's single scull gold medal has helped Australia finish third at the rowing world championships in the United States.

Horrie set a world record of nine minutes and 39 seconds over 2km in Sarasota, Florida on Sunday to win Australia's third gold of the event.

Madeleine Edmunds and Olympia Aldersey added a bronze to the country's tally in the women's double scull on the final day of competition.

The results came a day after Australia shot up the medal tally by winning gold in the men's and women's fours.

Italy topped the competition, with New Zealand in second.

Australia's performance director Bernard Savage said the tournament marked a positive start to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic cycle.

"For the team to have achieved six medals, including three golds is a good boost for our young team as we continue to develop," Savage said.

"There are a lot of positives for us to build on and we're delighted for all our medallists, including our three new world champions."

Sunday's was Horrie's fourth world championship and the 37-year-old has set his sights on adding to his haul of two silver Paralympic medals in Tokyo.

"I think the racing is just going to get faster and faster and I think the times will come down a lot more in the lead up to Tokyo," he said.
