Australia to join new hockey league

Australia will enter sides in both the men's and women's categories of a new home-and-away hockey league that will include the world's best countries.

Australia will take part in a new-look three-tiered hockey tournament that will see the world's best nations compete in a home-and-away league.

The competition, which will have a male and female component, begins in 2019 and will culminate in a stand-alone grand finale tournament to decide each year's champion.

In turn, it will replace the current annual World Hockey League semi-finals and finals.

"Ultimately it will make hockey more accessible with more world class hockey in Australia, more often," Hockey Australia chief executive Cam Vale, who played a role in organising the tournament, said.

Australia will host each team in the competition once in both tournaments, as well as travelling to each country for blockbuster away fixtures.

"The new structure for international hockey competition represents a step change in how we're thinking about the sport on a truly global scale," Vale said.

"It will also mean more hockey on TV, increasing the visibility of the sport to consumers and commercial partners."

The new league will also see lower-ranked teams competing in a second and third-flight competition over two-year cycles that would still lead to Olympic and World Cup qualification.
