A new report urges Australia to remove excessive restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful protests.

A new report is urging Australia to remove excessive restrictions on the fundamental rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful protests.

The report has been released by the Geneva-based organisation - International Services for Human Rights.

It will be formally considered by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva in November.

Emily Howie is from the Melbourne-based Human Rights Law Centre, which contributed to the report

She spoke to Zara Zaher about the findings.
